Raise Up The Tenth

The training page The live betting

Description:

Raise up the tenth is a game I worked on at UnitedGames. It's a free to play game on facebook created for BWin to promote the Real Madrid football team, and help the team win it's tenth Champions League title. A side goal was to promote fun-betting.

The game mainly consists of trainings, which cost energy to perform. By performing the training jobs a player has a chance to loot collectable and consumable items. Completing collections then gives the player extra energy and the consumable items are needed to complete other jobs. All jobs award match points, and give the player experience points. Upon mastering a job the player would also gain a point in one of four stats, which increases the win chance in the panna challenge.

The game also contains a few minigames, like a daily quiz question, a penalty shootout and a panna challenge. The quiz question and panna challenge award match points, while the penalty shootout awards trading cards. These cards, like the consumable and collectable items, can then be traded with other players.

The goal of the game is to collect as many match points before the next match of Real Madrid begins. Once the match begins the players are able to bet their matchpoints on live events during the match, i.e. which team will score the next goal. After the match has ended the top five players with the most matchpoins will win a real Real Madrid related prize.

The game was pretty succesful and had a total of well over 150.000 players, and more than 8.000 unique players each day. The game stopped after Real Madrid was knocked out of the Champions League.

Challenges:

On this project I did a lot of work on the backend. The game was created in PHP, using the symfony 1.4 framework MySQL and Memcached. The live betting engine was written in Java. The game was completed in 6 weeks.

One of the biggest challenges in this project was security. As players constantly tried to exploit the game we had to make sure there were no vulnerabilites at all by extensively testing and trying to exploit the code ourselves.

The creation of a generic and extensible achievement system was another challenge. The eventual system I created turned out to work very good and was also used in a few other games that were created at UnitedGames.
